Hawaiʻi Convention Center Rooftop Repair Project & Other Building Upgrades and Enhancements
Overview
The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) is the state agency responsible for the marketing, management, use, operation, and maintenance of the Hawai‘i Convention Center (HCC) in accordance with HRS 201B-7(a)(7). Repairing the rooftop terrace deck is essential to protect the building and meeting spaces, ensuring the facility can operate at full capacity and provide an exceptional experience for users. Upgrading this critical infrastructure will allow HCC to remain competitive with other convention destinations, attract more events, and support Hawai‘i’s economy by driving business to hotels, restaurants, retail establishments, and visitor attractions statewide. These improvements will help position HCC as a modern, world-class venue.
Key Improvements to the Hawaiʻi Convention Center
- Fourth-Floor Pedestrian Plaza (95,000 sq. ft.)
- Removal of existing terrace finishes, planters, water features, and old waterproofing
- Installation of new sloping cementitious fill, drainage system, and hot rubberized waterproofing
- Modern finishes, including ceramic tile pedestal and concrete pavements
- New mechanical elements for improved functionality
- Enhanced Event Spaces
- Reconstruction of ballroom bathroom exterior walls
- A new sound wall to reduce event impacts on surrounding area
- New raised performance stage
- 38,000 sq. ft. fabric and steel canopy for rain and shade protection for outside events
- Children’s Courtyard Revitalization
- Removal and reconstruction of walls and planters
- New waterproofing and plantings
- Addition of a self-contained water feature for an inviting atmosphere
- Accessibility Upgrades
- ADA-compliant civil site improvements to hardscape around the building perimeter
Construction Schedule (as of December 2025)
- Construction Start Date: January 2, 2026
- Phase 1: Interior Demolition, Structural Upgrades, Canopy Piers (January 2026 – July 2026)
- Phase 2: Rooftop Canopy Erection (July 2026 – February 2027)
- Phase 3: Re-roofing Sequence (February 2027 – June 2027)
- Phase 4: Finishes (June 2027 – October 2027)
- Project Completion: November 2027
- Hawaiʻi Convention Center Reopens: January 2028
